Knowing when you should double down in Blackjack can set you apart from the rest. Blackjack is a popular card game enjoyed by many around the world. The game is not only a game of chance but requires you to have a level of skill when it comes to reading the game. Part of understanding the game is knowing when to pull a move. Knowing when to double down in blackjack will help you get the most out of your game.

What does it mean to Double Down?

Doubling down is when a player makes an additional wager for one more card after the first two cards have been dealt. The tricky part with this is that you can’t return the card or get additional hits.

Unlike pushing an equal amount sign next to your original bet at a land-based casino, when playing online, a ‘double’ or ‘double down’ button will pop up for you to click on.

Rules for Doubling Down

The rules for doubling down will differ for the different blackjack variations online. For example, most casinos won’t permit you to double after splitting, while others allow you to double with a 10 or 11. This limits your soft card combinations.

You can consider doubling down when your bet is equal to your initial bet. This means that you only get one card in exchange. You cannot double down once you hit or take a third card.

When Should You Double Down?

The best times to double down are when you have an 11, a hard 9 or 10, and on most pairs of 5’s. Having an 11 is one of the best bets to double down with. A hard hand is one that doesn’t include an ace. So, if you have a hard 9, double if the dealer shows a hand between a 3 and 6.

Pairs of 5’s are odds, and calculations have shown that it is better to neither split nor stand with this pair. The only exception will be if you have a 10 or an ace. Then you can choose to hit.

When You Should Not Double Down

Never double down when the dealer has an ace. An ace is a strong card. When you have a hand higher than 11, you risk busting with hard hands. Hard hands of 5 through to 8 are easier to hit when you have a soft 19 or 20.
